UDL History

Universal Design for Learning has its background in Architecture and Urban Planning. It came about as a way to remove barriers in learning just as physical barriers are removed in architecture. Examples of this type of accommodation would be curb cuts so that people who use wheelchairs can cross intersections without having to go over the curb, ramps for access into buildings instead of using stairs, and lower counters for those who are in wheelchairs or vertically challenged.
